Workshop on P3 User Meeting

On Monday 30th June Stefan Weber (Leader of the ELI Beamlines Research Programs 5-6) and Deepak Kumar (ELI Beamlines Applied Physicist) organized the workshop on P3 User Meeting. The group of high-level international scientists – P. Audebert (LULI, FR), R. Clarke (RAL, UK), T. Cowan (HZR, Germany), T. Ditmire (Texas, USA), R. Edwards (AWE, UK), R. Fedosejev (Univ. Alberta, Canada), J. Fuchs (LULI, France), L. Gizzi (Pisa, Italy), D. Jaroszynski (SCAPA, UK), K. Oades (AWE, UK) and D. Riley (Queen’s Univ. Belfast, UK) gathered with the ELI Beamlines specialists to discuss the functionality and user requirements of the Plasma Physics Platform (P3) which is occupying one of the experimental halls in the future ELI-Beamlines. The purpose was to discuss the design of the experimental infrastructure, the diagnostic systems and the beam transport for P3. The complexity of P3 arises from the fact that it has to support operation of kilo-Joule as well as high-intensity 10 PW laser beams. The presence of the external experts allowed the research group R5 to profit from their knowledge and experience and help with solving important questions concerning the construction of P3.

In particular the meeting:

1)     identified future user requirements and interest for plasma physics experiments and laser-plasma-interaction in P3/E3 2)     discussed diagnostic requirements/preferences 3)     discussed the design of the big chamber & beam transport layout/geometry 4)     defined the interrelationship between experiments, beam geometry and hardware (chamber/diagnostics) 5)     considered possible future operation scenarios for P3 6)     helped to identify possible future collaborations on specific aspects of P3

Once operational, P3 (see figure below) will be a unique civilian installation in Europe for research in high-energy density plasma physics, ultra-high intensity laser-plasma interaction, laboratory astrophysics and warm dense matter studies.
