Hedvika Kadlecová was awarded L’Oréal UNESCO prize for women in science

She is running halfmarathons and at the same time she investigates the processes in quantum vacuum. Hedvika Kadlecová who works in the ELI Beamlines Research Center in Dolní Břežany became one of the three winners of the prestigious award L’Oréal-UNESCO for women in science.

The prize is being awarded in the Czech republic for last 13 years and should support women’s scientific talents. Hedvika entered the competition at the instigation of her professor and recommends to the future scientists to study abroad and create an international net of contacts. In her project she investigates particle processes in vacuum.

The window into new physics

„ We collide two counter propagating laser beams and analyze the outgoing radiation by methods of quantum electrodynamics and nonlinear wave theory for the purposes of a real experiment, “ Kadlecová described her work in the video medallion. According to Kadlecová it is possible thanks to studying of the particle processes in vacuum to „open a window into a new physics and achieve better understanding of vacuum as an important media.“  Part of the research center in Dolní Břežany are four high-performance lasers, which scientists want to use to study extreme physical phenomena, such as simulation of events inside stars.

Together with Kadlecová also won Jana Žďárová Karasová, who is dedicated to military toxicology and works in the Faculty of Military Health Sciences, University of Defense in Hradec Králové. The third winner is Silvie Rimpelová, who investigates the potential diagnostics and treatment of cancer by means of fluorescent conjugates of natural substances. She works in the Institute of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague.
